First Day
"No, grandpa. Donât!â Klay screamed as he woke up. His hand quickly felt for the bracelet as he scanned his surroundings wildly, calming down once he remembered where he was. âRight,â he exhaled. âIâm at Akademos now.
His dorm room was large, about double the size of his and Finnâs homey shack in Wailen. The room was divided down the middle, with each half possessing a bed and a trunk to store their belongings. Both sides also had a chair and desk, which already held quite a few itemsâan introductory booklet for first-year students, a class schedule, some club, and squad recruitment flyers, and numerous invitations to âstop by and visitâ the many shops in Kneola.
Klayâs gaze fell on his roommateâs empty bed. âI guess everyone wakes up before me,â he said, yawning as he walked to the window. âDamn it,â he cursed as he spotted Gayle and Ayran in the courtyard. âIâm late.â
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
It was too early for Gayle to be as irritated as she was. But as she and Ayran waited for Klay in the dewy grass, at their meeting place next to the statue of Atlas, this was the primary emotion she felt.
Excited chatter echoed through the courtyard as students trickled out of the dormitories in various groups, eagerly discussing what to expect for their first day of class. As they passed by, a few slowed to gaze up at the statue in awe, finally able to appreciate its magnificence in the morning light, while others paused with their heads bowed in reverence.
The 15-foot-tall statue was pristine, as if it had been placed there mere moments ago. The smooth marble glistened brilliantly, reflecting the rays of the morning sun. At the base of the statue was a golden plaque that read: AtlasâThe peerless one. Atlas stood tall and strong, with hair that fell to his shoulders. On the back of his left fist was a nine-pointed star with a cross at its center. His eyes peered into the distance as if anticipating some unseen threat.
Gayle was dressed in the school uniformâa white short-sleeved blouse, a dark gray skirt, and leggings. A light-green tie hung loosely around her neck, and her school jacket was tied around her waist. As she tapped her feet impatiently, she pulled out her ID card. She closed her eyes and breathed in. Her aura surrounded her as she channeled her Aether into the card.
âTime,â she said, then read her card anxiously as 8:15 appeared on its face.
A burst of annoyance surged through Gayle. Where is he? she thought. She and Ayran had planned to meet with Ari at the first-year building before their first class began. Of course, Gayle was more than happy to wait for Klay, but she and Ayran had already been waiting for fifteen minutes. If Klay didnât hurry, they were going to be late.
âLooks like someone played with their ID last night,â Ayran said as he adjusted his pale-blue tie. Like his sister, he was dressed in his school uniform, wearing a white shirt, gray trousers, and tie.
